Beata Vergine dei Miracoli
The most famous monument in Saronno is the sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the miracles, built in the Bramante style. Famous architects such as Giovanni Antonio Amadeo and Pellegrino de’ Pellegrini worked together on its construction.
The sanctuary was built in 1498, near the pre-existing small church, subsequently demolished, erected years earlier, following the miraculous recovery of a young lady from Saronno who was praying an old statue, once placed on the road to Varese and now situated in the church apse.
The internal decorations were started by Bernardino Luini in1525; in the large dome is frescoed the masterpiece by Gaudenzio Ferrari, the majestic concert of angels in Heaven. In the large painting more than one hundred and twenty angel musicians are frescoed, in three concentric circles, each one in the act of playing a different musical instrument. It is a moving and evocative angel concert thanks to the skilful manner in which shapes and colours are used; it lifts the viewer high in a harmonious whirl of magic and inspired poetry. The sanctuary also contains works by many other painters and sculptors.
