Arsago Seprio: the Longobards and the Romanesque
Arsago Seprio, situated about 20 kilometres from Varese, borders with the Somma Lombardo area and forms a part of the Ticino regional park.
The most ancient human settlements date back to the prehistoric period and Gallic and Roman remains were also found in this area. It was certainly a Roman “vicus”, seat of an important military garrison, and it subsequently became a “pagus”, a market place.
During the Longobard and Frank period it became more prestigious, thanks mainly to the presence of prominent local aristocratic families. The Arnolfi, of Frank origin, made this small place important and powerful. During the Middle Ages, Arsago became part of the Seprio Committee and it takes its name to this day.
In 1129 the region of Arsago became the feudal domain of the Visconti family of Somma Lombardo and remained that way until 1700, when the feudal rights were suppressed.
Since ancient times there must have been remarkable religious buildings in Arsago, but unfortunately their traces have been lost.
Today the town is famous for its important Romanesque complex, which consists of the basilica of San Vittore (IX – XII century), the baptistery (XI century) and the bell tower of the same period. It represents a remarkable example of religious architecture, among the most famous in the region. The basilica of San Vittore, a national monument, underwent several restoration works in order to bring the religious nucleus back to its primitive Romanesque style. The building has a central nave and two side aisles separated by columns of different shapes; the capitals of these columns are of Roman origin. The masonry structure is lightened by lancet windows and by a row of little blind arches, typical of this area.
The stone bell-tower is solid and imposing; it was built with filling material and here also we find the typical little hanging arches separating the various floors. At the top of the tower there are chimes which were placed in an open cella in 1872.
Beside the church, stands the octagonal shaped baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which, according to tradition, was built between 998 and 1018 according to the wishes of Arnolfo II of Arsalo, archbishop of Milan.
Basilica and baptistery were probably built by the same workmen, who are believed to have belonged to the corporation of the famous com’acini (from Como) masters. Inside the baptistery, in the thickness of the wall, two staircases were built leading upstairs to the gallery, and eight niches with rectangular or trapezoidal ground plans. The local archaeological museum is also very important; it was founded 1977 and it is famous for being the most outstanding Longobard museum in Italy. In 1972 four tombs, containing intact male and female personal belongings, were found in a VII century Longobard necropolis and a Roman necropolis was discovered in 1975. In the vicinity stands the XII century Romanesque oratory of the Saints Cosma and Damiano, and nearby parts of a very old track leading towards the Ticino are still be recognisable.
