Badia di San Gemolo
Tradition would have it that the Abbey stood at the end of the XI century near the place of the martyrdom of St. Gemolo.
Legend tells that Gemolo was slain by brigands from Seprio towards the end of the X century (although a little order is necessary here).
Together with Imerio he had tried in vain to pursue the bandits who had stolen from the caravan - of which he was a member - while it had suspended its journey from the north towards Italy in order to book at an Inn for the night. The body of Gemolo was buried in Valganna, probably on the site of an existing chapel dedicated to him at only a few kilometres outside Ganna in the direction of Varese. The Abbey was founded a short time after, in 1095, by Attone, Arderico and Inghizone on the permission of the Archbishop of Milan, Arnolfo II (appointed Archbishop in 1093, d. 1097). This event or story, probably true, besides explaining the dedication of the church and the abbey, also supplies us with a brief beginning in order to understand the difficult `neighbourly` relations to which the Abbey was subjected as a result of its strategic position. In fact, it is not fortuitous that the brigands are said to be of Seprio, in other words, precisely from that powerful contado or territory scarcely tolerated by the Archbishop of Milan due to the control it exercised over the communication routes from and for the Alpine passes. It must therefore have appeared as being opportune to the Archbishop to have a faithful vassal to the north of Seprio, in a place which was decisive not merely because it controlled the narrow passage of the Valganna [Ganna Valley] but also because it could circumscribe the power of Como whose territory extended to the Lake of Lugano. In the course of time, however, the abbots did not prove faithful to Milan. Apart from including landed property in Valganna, Val Marchirolo and Valcuvia, the benefice awarded by Arnolfo also comprised the very important Castle of Frascarolo, of importance because of the control it had over the road stretching from Varese to the ford of Ponte Tresa which in being unable to pass through the neck of the banks climbed, instead, on the mountain sides. Secure of so much importance the monastery steered a middle course between contrasting powers, trying to preserve its independence. While conforming to the Milanese liturgy in 1154 it lay within the orbit of the Abbey of Fruttuaria, together with San Michele of Voltorre. However, it remained within the Milanese liturgy for only a few years - and not without conflicts. It made itself independent as early on as 1179 and for this reason the abbot of Fruttuaria excommunicated the entire chapter of San Gemolo in 1237. And neither were the relationships with Voltorre very easy: in fact, they plummeted with the beginning of 1200 when the intervention of the apostolical legates was requested in order to settle the quarrel. The fortunes of the Abbey of Ganna were similar to those of Voltorre and Sesto Calende. Transformed into a Commendam in 1477, from 1566 the revenues were administered by the Ospedale Maggiore of Milan. The possessions which remained were sold off in 1825. The complex served merely as a parish church following the demise of the monastery in 1556. Today the building shows the signs of so many complex events and vicissitudes and does in fact appear to be really quite composite with regard to its construction styles and periods. The church and the characteristic pentagonal cloister are the parts which have to the greatest degree conserved their original physiognomy whereas the guest-rooms and the other buildings serving the monastery have been radically changed by their present-day agricultural use. The cloister houses the museum of the Abbey (open on Sunday afternoons from April to October) which exhibits heterogeneous material relevant to the prehistory and history of the area including church ornaments and vestments, some old laud-books and ceramics. There is also a small picture gallery. Of particular interest are the showcases containing prehistoric material from Le Tène (Canton of Ticino) and Velate (Varese).
