Voltorre: the Monastery
The Monastery of Voltorre was built in the XII century, at the point where Lake Varese forms the gulf of Gavirate, on the plateau opposite the small island of Virginia.
The cloister, an example of a magnificent, well balanced Romanesque style, stands beside the church of St. Michael and is dominated by the massive and austere bell tower. The cloister of Voltorre was mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the XIII century and was attributed, perhaps only in part, to Lanfranco da Ligurno. It retains three original sides dated in the XII century, whereas the fourth dates back to the fourteenth century.
The complex is particularly interesting for the typical clusters of outbuildings erected around the monastery. Recent restorations, carried out by the Provincial Administration of Varese, the present owner of the cloister, have provided this area with an articulate and charming exhibition space, where art exhibitions and events are organised, as well as regular series of concerts.
