Varese: the town
Varese is renowned for its gardens and for this reason it is known as “the garden town”.
Its history and unique geographical position, at the centre of the lake region, have, down the centuries, moulded its features as well as the character of the people.
Entering the historical centre, we find the most important and significant monuments of the town. The old centre has a unique almond shape, crossed by a main street, once called “Corso Maggiore” and now Corso Matteotti.
The Corso, which today is a pedestrian area, is the liveliest street in town and represents the real heart of Varese. Porticos and elegant shops line each side of the Corso, which is also a very popular place in which to walk and to meet people. It links Piazza Monte Grappa, the main square in Varese, with Piazza Carducci. Half way down, the Corso opens up into the small Piazza Podestà, dominated by the monument to the Alpine Hunter (1901), or as the people in Varese call it the “garibaldino”, a bronze copy of the marble original, sculptured by Leone Buzzi in 1867. The small piazza is named after the old palace of the Pretorio (1570) where the Varese Podesta’ lived. At the end of the corso there is the beautiful building which housed the sixteenth century convent of San Antonino which contains a magnificent cloister surrounded by porticos, with remains of eighteenth century frescoes.
The convent refectory is today the Veratti Hall, the entrance to which is in the road of the same name and belongs to the Borough of Varese which uses it as an exhibition centre. The hall was almost entirely frescoed by Pietro Antonio Magatti, the most important Varese painter of the eighteenth century, with the help of Giuseppe Baroffio, also from Varese. At the end of the Corso there is Piazza Carducci, where the beautiful XVII century Comolli palace stands. From Piazza Carducci, via Cattaneo leads to Piazza Beccaria, situated at the beginning of the long Viale Aguggiari which leads up towards St.Ambrogio and the Sacro Monte of Varese.
Varese: art in Varese
From prehistoric times to the art nouveau period, from the discovery of agriculture to the industry of footwear and of the most famous motorcycles, Varese offers various outstanding activities which contribute to the creation of a wide range of local characteristics.
In the areas around the town and in the settlements around the old village, there are refined patrician villas of great architectural value which stand out in the green of age-old parks and gardens from where the view stretches as far as the peaks of the Alps.
In the most aristocratic of these settlements, Biumo Superiore, can be found among other things, the eighteenth century Villa Menafoglio – Litta – Panza, today a property of FAI (Fund for the Italian Environment), where the museum of environmental art and the collection of contemporary art which belonged to count Giuseppe Panza, are housed. It represents, for Varese, an invitation to understand and to fall in love with the art of the second half of the twentieth century as well as the opportunity to participate in important events, some of which organised in co-operation with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. In the same area there are the parish Church of St. George the Martyr and the church of St. Ann, which contain frescoes by Pietro Antonio Magatti and his school. Nearby there is the Ville Ponti complex (today an international congress centre, the property of the local Chamber of Commerce) immersed in the large English style park.
In Casbeno, the most ancient settlement in Varese, stands the splendid palace of the Province, which also houses the Varese Prefecture; it is named “Villa Recalcati” after its first owners. It was subsequently inhabited by the Morosini of Vezia and, in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Varese became a very fashionable holiday resort, the palace became one of the most famous hotels in Northern Italy.
In Giubiano, the Villa “Pero”, which was extended by the tenor Tamagno, now houses the Administration offices of Varese Hospital and the large park around it hosts the hospital buildings.
In the town centre stands Palazzo Estense, today the headquarters of the Borough of Varese surrounded by a magnificent historical park, the upper part of which is linked with the park of Villa Mirabello, housing the archaeological museums.
In Masnago, a suburb of Varese, stands the Castiglioni – Mantegazza castle, today a modern and contemporary art museum belonging to the Borough of Varese.
On the nearby Campigli Hill, stands the Palace Hotel, the most prestigious hotel in the Province of Varese, built in art nouveau style following the design of architects Moretti and Sommaruga.
In another part of the town, behind the church of St. Anthony of Padua, built around 1950 (designed by the Milanese architect Muzio), stands the “De Filippi” College, built beside an old hunting lodge belonging to the Perabò family which contains XVI century frescos of Flemish and Nordic inspiration.
In the heart of the original village, along the old main street, with shops and porticos on each side, as well as courtyards and convents, the old commercial spirit of the town can still be sensed; indeed the one thousand year old market is still relived today in the elegant and refined market which is held monthly.
In the historical centre the following are of particular note: the Basilica of St. Vittore, which preserves paintings by Morazzone and Cerano; the Baroque bell tower by Bernascone; the Baptistry of St. John; the church of St. Joseph; the Veratti Hall, the cloister of the old convent of St. Antonino and the church St. Anthony at Motta.
These monuments in Varese are reminiscent of the faith and the culture which, in the seventeenth century lay behind the construction of the spectacular Sacro Monte of the Rosary. This monumental complex, with the Sanctuary and the village, harmoniously set in the landscape of the pre-Alps was declared “Humanity Heritage” by Unesco in 2004, a splendid example of what Giovanni Testori defined as a majestic “mountain theatre”.
Indeed Sacro Monte reserves, for pilgrims and visitors, deep emotions and great attractions for the charm which flows from its architecture, sculptures, paintings and craft. All of these arts have found, in the chapels, the Sanctuary and in the village, a very harmonious synthesis, in a superb natural setting which enhances the contours and represents the symbol of this land, surrounded by lakes, which was once called Insubria.
