Luino
Formerly known as “Luvinio”, Luino is renowned for its valleys and its market. Situated at the mouth of Valtravaglia, today it is a lively lakeside town. Luino probably has proto-historic origins and it was inhabited in Roman times. During the Middle Ages it was of secondary importance, being overshadowed by Maccagno and Valtravaglia, but it gained in importance when, in 1541, Charles V granted the inhabitants of Luino the right to have a market on alternate dates with Maccagno. This concession was confirmed once and for all in 1786, after changing fortunes due to competition with Laveno. Since that time the market has taken place in Luino every Wednesday, attracting a large crowd of buyers or simply onlookers, even from nearby Switzerland. Approaching the built-up area, we find the fifteenth century church of Carmine, founded by the blessed Jacopo Line. Inside the church a valuable cycle of sixteenth century frescoes and a valuable Crucifixion can be admired. In the historical centre, still on the lake front, stands the seventeenth century church of San Giuseppe, the work of the Milanese architect Georolamo Quadrio; the pulpit, the choir and the eighteenth century organ are all worth seeing.
The most ancient and impressive religious building in Luino is the old church of San Pietro in Campagna, situated beside the cemetery and the Viale delle Rimembranze. In this church the fifteenth century fresco of The Adoration of the Magi, attributed to Bernardino Luini, can be admired. Its Romanesque bell tower is one of the most beautiful in the northern part of the province of Varese, the first of a series of bell towers which have Romanesque style features. We recommend a walk along the lake front and a visit to the historical centre. Charming places can be discovered, of which Piero Chiara and Vittorio Sereni, exceptional writers from Luino, have given wonderful descriptions.

He then cast his eye over the quay where Amedeo was varnishing his boat, or remained absorbed in his thoughts and stared at the reflections of the sun under the piers. If he turned his eyes towards the village he could see the front of my house in the shade, with the two granite stairways and the windows open to let in the air from the lake. Beside the house, stands via Mercanti, brightened by the sun’s rays shining on the top part of the building and soothed by the reflection below.
