Leaving Luino and going through Germignaga, where fishermen still smoke fish, following the signs for Bedero Valtravaglia, you will pass close to the church of St. John, with its bell tower, which were probably part of an old castle, of which a tower still existed until 1885.
If you are travelling by bicycle, you still have about three kilometres uphill in front of you, the only really difficult part of the whole route, before you reach the top of the hill where the collegiate church of San Vittore in Brezzo of Bedero Valtravaglia stands, an excellent example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Although the first documented evidence relating to the church dates back to 1137, archaeological excavations have found evidence of the existence of an older building. The present appearance is the result of successive interventions, which over the centuries have altered its architecture. The façade is the result of a rather inexpert reconstruction, carried out at the end of the nineteenth century, when the upper part was rebuilt and the baptismal chapel was created along the left aisle. The bell tower dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century.
Entering the church, which is open during times of worship, one can see, in the left aisle, some sculptures which formed the pulpit, and in the right aisle, a VI century Christian tombstone, found on the site.
The sacristies were built in the sixteenth century, by shortening the two side aisles. The frescoes in the apse date back to 1510; the date is painted near a window on the right. The trussed roof dates back to recent restoration, when the vaulted roof-covering built in the seventeenth century was demolished, whereas the original vaulted roof-covering was conserved in the side aisles. The organ which was built in 1871 is interesting; in the summer, thanks to the support of the Province of Varese, a cycle of concerts is organised.
On the outside of the church, the apses, which are the best conserved parts of the building, are worth looking at.
