One of the most striking views in the whole of Lombardy can be contemplated from Monte Campo dei Fiori, at 1200 metres above sea level: the view reaches to Milan, as far as the Apennines, flows over the lakes of the Varese area, opens onto the splendid Alpine chain and on its peak, Monte Rosa, and travels across the gentle rolling pre-alpine hills as far as the plain.
The Park of Campo dei Fiori covers a large area including many villages and is famous for its imposing beech woods as well as its meadows, once covered with beautiful flowers. Today the park is under the protection of the Lombardy Region and it is forbidden to pick daffodils, cyclamens and other protected flowers.
Campo dei Fiori is a massif with many peaks: Sacro Monte (880m.), Three Crosses (1111m.), and the twin peaks of Mount Campo dei Fiori and Paradiso (1226m). The mountains around Varese can be easily explored along the numerous marked trails (see the guide “Via Verde Varesina”), through the woods and the many open spaces with sunny fields and lookout points. It is valued for the different excursions which can be discovered in tranquillity, such as the flat trails leading from the astronomical observatory as far as the Orino fortress (about 5 kilometres).
Campo dei Fiori is a special park: walking though it, admiring the well cared for flowers, bushes and plants, you will fall in love with it as if it were your own; it allows you to discover the magical world of nature. Even in times past, travellers and tourists searched for these magical sensations and atmospheres, which were found in the harmony of the landscape or in the unique and serene view of our mountains and lakes. At the beginning of 1900, during the “Belle Epoque” Varese enjoyed a particularly happy period, both for tourism and for art; during this time Varese was a very popular holiday resort and the architect Giuseppe Sommaruga built, on top of the mountain, the Hotel “Campo dei Fiori”, the restaurant, the funicular railway station and some of the best villas in the province; all examples of the art nouveau style.
We are lucky that today we can rediscover the mountain and its treasures thanks to this efficiently organised park: the trails are very clearly signposted and the woodland is well preserved. There are many places which are worth visiting in Campo dei Fiori, for example: Sacro Monte, the Astronomical Observatory and the Centre of Botanic Studies, the art nouveau buildings, the karst grottos, the rocky cliffs used for mountaineering, the cross-country ski trails, the chestnut and beech woods. All of these attractions are well marked on several detailed maps which can be obtained at the Park information points.
