In the borough of Brezzo di Bedero, situated as a look-out over Lake Maggiore, the village of Canonica, which gets its name from the magnificent Collegiate Church of San Vittore of the XII century, is one of the jewels to be enjoyed in the Varese area.
The Collegiate preserved XV and XVI century frescoes, (the scene with the martyrdom of San Vittore is particularly remarkable), in the apse and on the triumphal arch and it also contains ancient and valuable musical codes, fundamental for the study of the Ambrosian chant and for the studies of musical palaeography. The XVII century organ, restored in the XVIII century is also of great interest.
The complex is deeply embedded in the woods and the mountain environment on one side, and the gentle atmosphere of the lake on the other.
This architectural complex is very imposing and austere; it is also the venue of important international classical music events.
