The Ticino Park is one of the largest fluvial parks in Europe; it covers 46 boroughs situated in the provinces of Varese, Pavia and Milan.
The Ticino, known as the “blue river” flows through the Lombard plain from Lake Maggiore to the river Po and, thanks to its geographical location, it offers an incredible variety of landscapes as well as of animal and plant species.
Given the spaciousness of the Park, it is possible to divide it into different areas:
1. the valley carved out by the river and the environment linked to it;
2. the plain areas rich in water;
3. the Castanets plain;
4. the plain north of theVilloresi canal;
5. the first morainic hills of the Varese region.
The nature of the park is very lush; in the water, water lilies and duckweed can be found, on the shore, in the areas which are periodically submerged, there are marsh reeds, yellow irises and white willows.
The arboreal plants include, above all, poplars, alders, hornbeams oaks, and elms whereas in the undergrowth, hawthorns and privets can be found as well as many varieties of flowers.
Among the animal species living in the Ticino park, there is a large number of birds such as turtledoves, nightingales, thrushes; in the undergrowth, hares, foxes and martens live, hedgehogs are very common as well as numerous species of insects and reptiles.
Several species of fish, such as trout, pike, carp and many others live in the river. Since ancient times the area surrounding the Ticino has been a thoroughfare and a meeting point for many different civilizations and this is the reason it is possible to find several historical features within the Park: castles, monasteries, convents and churches are spread around the Park region as well as in the areas where archaeological findings were made of the different cultural eras which have existed here over the centuries.
The Ticino Park can be visited in many different ways: on foot, by bike, boat, coach, on horseback. The Park’s well signposted paths and itineraries are suitable for everyone and can be enjoyed in any season.
