The province of Varese is, without any doubt, an ideal location for a lakeside holiday. There is the possibility of choosing from several lakes: Lakes Maggiore, Varese, Comabbio, Monate, Lugano as well as other smaller lakes.
The largest of the lakes bordering onto the province of Varese is Lake Maggiore, the second largest lake, in terms of area, in Italy.
Lake Lugano, or Ceresio, lies mainly in Switzerland, but the small part lying in the province of Varese, has small, pretty towns such as Porto Ceresio and Lavena Ponte Tresa, offering the possibility of enjoying quiet and peaceful days.
Lake Varese is situated at the foot of Campo dei Fiori and it is surrounded by wooded shores and hundred year old trees. In the lake lies the small island of Virginia, where interesting prehistoric remains, which can now be seen in the small museum on the island, have been found. The lake offers the possibility of participating in various sporting activities such as sailing, fishing and canoeing. Currently a cycle-pedestrian route around the perimeter of the lake is in the final stage of completion. It is already been used by many people who, either on foot or on bicycles enjoy the pleasant outing on the lake shore.
The lakes of Comabbio and Monate are two small lakes situated on the east side of Lake Maggiore offering, particularly Monate, very clean water. They are interesting for the charming and picturesque villages on their shores.
Finally amongst the lakes of the province it is worth remembering the small lake of Ghirla, a favourite summer destination and Ganna, a natural reserve, valued for its flora and fauna.
