The Tower of Velate: Antiquity and History

An ancient stronghold with a big symbolic value

The Tower of Velate is in Varese, on the hills that dominate the road which takes to the Lake Maggiore.
It rises in the South of the centre, near S.Cassiano Church and was built in the XIth century, to protect the Velate village.
The tower's remains that we can still admire are the North and the East walls and in the interior we can notice the traces of five floors, in addition to downstairs.
After particular researches, new important informations about the construction has been discovered: for example, between the Vth and the VIth century a.C., about seven centuries before the tower was built, there was a house in the same place.
We have this information because some ceramic archeological findings have been discovered.
Later, another construction was built. It had a military-defensive function and it was used until the tower was built.
A burst layer has also been discovered. It belongs to the end of the XIIth century, when the tower was partially destroyed, probably during the war between Visconti of Milano and Torriani of Como.
In this burst layer some silver coins have been discovered.
The tower had a military function, but around the XIIIth and XIVth century it was surrounded by vineyard and fields.
Other coins and ceramic findings show that Velate has been active at least until the 1600.
Still today, the tower has a big symbolic value for the inhabitants.
